DIY Bike Wall
Before & After
Solving the Bike Storage Puzzle: A Practical DIY Solution
Finding the perfect bike storage solution can be a real challenge. Options are often expensive, space-specific, and not always practical for a busy household. As our kids grew older and their bikes got bigger, we found ourselves with more bikes than ever—and no efficient way to store them. At one point, we had bikes scattered across three different walls in the garage! The disorganization was frustrating, and maneuvering the bikes around our cars was becoming a daily annoyance.
It was clear we needed a better solution.
Exploring Storage Options
We researched countless bike storage ideas: hanging bikes from the ceiling, building upright wooden racks, and even investing in sliding bike storage systems like Rubbermaid’s. Unfortunately, every option had its drawbacks. Ceiling mounts were out because our garage has low ceilings. Floor-standing solutions required too much precious floor space. Wall-mounted systems seemed promising, but many were either too expensive or not practical for our limited wall area.
The DIY Breakthrough
Thankfully Corban was up for the challenge. He carefully measured the available space and the dimensions of each bike. That’s when he had a lightbulb moment: by alternating the bikes’ direction (some upside-down, others right-side up), we could fit more into the limited area. The small stretch of wall near the side door and the furnace/water heater wasn’t much, but it had to work.
To ensure the setup was sturdy, Corban mounted a wooden board directly into the wall studs. This provided a secure base for the bike hooks. After a quick trip to Home Depot, we came back with coated bike hooks, which are affordable, easy to install, and gentle on the bike frames.
The Result
Now, all our bikes are neatly stored in one spot, off the ground, and easy to access. The garage feels more organized, and we’ve reclaimed precious floor space. Best of all, this DIY solution didn’t break the bank and works perfectly within the constraints of our garage.
If you’re struggling with bike storage, consider taking a DIY approach. With a little creativity, careful measurements, and the right tools, you can create a custom solution that works for your space and your budget!
