DIY Pallet Shelf

This pallet shelf was my first DIY project from 6 years ago! I don’t have as many pictures as I would have liked of building this shelf because it was a desperation build and I had a 1 year old but here’s what I’ve got. I built this to function as another storage space in our kitchen. We were living in a detached mother in law suite at our grandma’s house at the time that was lacking in the storage department The kitchen was a great space but we had one single upper cabinet in the entire kitchen and only 2 lower cabinets and then a few drawers! We used this pallet shelf to store coffee/drink supplies and to be an extra flat surface since the countertops were minimal. The back of this shelf was over a deep lower cabinet so it ended up being my husband’s workout and coffee supplies primarily because I couldn’t really reach the back or the top shelf!

I don’t even remember where the pallet came from but my guess is my in laws had it. We pried off the boards on one side and lined them up on the back so there was a mostly solid surface behind the shelves. Notching the shelf boards was the hardest part of this, especially since I do not have an engineering brain and somehow always get measurements not quite right. Once it was built I stained it with a mix of coffee grounds and steel wool (thanks to my MIL). This is one of my favorite was to stain beause it is super naturally made as well as being a beautiful rich color.

Once we bought our current house this shelf was no longer needed as kitchen storage (thank goodness!) and it has gotten to be a decorative shelf. It felt really dark for our big living room when we first held it up so I did a paint scrape over it to lighten it up but still keep some character so it didn’t look painted white. Now I wish the shelves could be deeper to hold more plants but I’m making it work, maybe someday I’ll change up the shelving!

This shelf was built entirely in my in-law’s garage with their tools and expertise and I’m so thankful they shared that with me! This was truly my first DIY and I had no idea what I was doing but it sparked something in me that has continued to grow and progress and now I’m comfortable to take on much bigger projects! At the same time I built this I also made one that was a coffee mug rack but that was very simple and I’m not exactly sure where it even ended up after the move!

Have you ever built anything with pallets? Let me know in the comments!
