Home Appliance Guide

This is the story of the appliance saga in our house, what we have replaced the broken appliances with, and what brands I recommend after lots of research.

When we bought our house December of 2017 there were no functioning appliances in the kitchen as you can see. We looked at Costco and saw they had a Samsung package for the whole kitchen in stainless steel for a great price and we bought it. We were so excited to have all new appliances and to have stainless steel!

About a year and a half in I used the self cleaning function on our oven and it completely shattered our oven door, in November right before thanksgiving. It took over a month for them to send someone out and replace it with a new door. We have had to replace one ignitor in the oven and the second one is on our to do list.

Our microwave is also being held together by Corban’s amazing ability to use toothpicks and superglue because the door broke.

Our Samsung refrigerator made it less than 5 years before it completely bit the dust. The problems originally started within the 2 year window of warranty from Costco with the ice maker but at the time I was dealing with a broken community septic pump and the shattered oven door so I couldn’t add anything else to my mental load. Year 3.5 or so we started nursing it along after 2 years of hair drying the ice maker on the regular so it would work, we had to completely take off the back panel and de-ice everything. We then foam insulated it and it worked for a little while but then we ran out of YouTube tutorials to watch and decided it was time. We bought the Whirlpool 25 cu. French door frifrigerator from Costco it has been a fantastic appliance so far. It came with delivery, removal of the old one, and installation, yay Costco! The Whirlpool also has a metal pull out for the refrigerator which I appreciate the sturdiness of and it seems to scratch far less than the Samsung. I also love how the water and ice are separate. We are front dispensing water and ice people here-too many smoothies made in this house for us not to be!

After 5 years with our Samsung dishwasher and endless issues from being very difficult to clean, the outside being plastic and not stainless steel(found that out the hard way), constantly not cleaning dishes no matter the dish rinse liquid and washing soap brand, we finally ordered a Bosch. The cherry on top was that the seal failed and water started leaking on our floor. We got the Bosch 800 with the towel bar from Costco which comes with a 2 year warranty, all parts and install included as well as removing the old appliance. It is the BEST! I knew I was spending a lot of time doing dishes but I’m not kidding when I say it feels SO easy to keep my kitchen now because I’m not checking every dish I pull out to see if it’s clean or not.

We bought our washer and dryer used in 2015 and it worked for what we needed. Nothing fancy and it worked great until a piece on the washer broke. I ordered the piece and fixed it myself but it involved taking apart the ENTIRE machine and it was a total pain so when that same piece broke again a few years later we decided it was time for a new one. We bought the Whirlpool 5.2-5.3 top load washer with the removable agitator from Home Depot. Having the ability to remove the agitator means I can wash our California king comforter, large rugs, and other bulky items like pillows. I originally intended to get a front loader but after learning how much more prone those machines are to leaking, growing mold and mildew, and having issues I decided to go top load and I love it. The capacity is amazing and it’s fancy but not wifi enabled ridiculousness, though sometimes when I’m gone for hours longer than I intended, I wish it was.

We got rid of our old Ninja blender that didn’t work well early covid and got a Vitamix Explorian. I got it from Costco and then returned it and got a Vitamix Ascent from Amazon once I learned that this base could also work with their food processor attachment. I then got the food processor and now I only have one appliance base and two appliances. Yay for less bulky appliances crowding up our kitchens am I right!? Both the food processor and blender work SO well and we use ours multiple times a day, we even travel with it-slightly embarrassing? Yes, but totally worth it.

Dyson vacuums are worth the price tag. As someone who wanted one for a long time but could never justify it, after trying a Shark, LG stick, and an Amazon robot vacuum, NOTHING works as well as a Dyson. I got the v15 Detect bundle fro Costco with all of the different fluffy, carpet and other accessories and it works so much better it’s not even funny. I also bought an extra filter at recommendation from my friend Amy and that’s been totally worth it as well. I finally got it mounted recently and I’m so excited it has a permanent home!

Do you see a common “Costco” theme here! Haha we love Costco!
